Value of CPCU Testimonial
Name: Theresa Parlette
Position: Public Affairs Supervisor, State Farm Insurance
CPCU Designation Year: 1995
Reason for Pursuing CPCU Designation:
I joined the insurance industry in 1988 and my education background included a Bachelors degree in Communication with a minor in English. I had not taken any business classes in college and knew very little about the insurance industry. I had a wonderful mentor who recommended I take the CPCU exams to learn more about the industry.
Path to CPCU:
When I took my first exam in January of 1989, I was a little overwhelmed with the three hour written exam format. Luckily, I was successful and continued my journey. It was not a smooth journey as I struggled to study for the Economics exam six weeks after my first child was born. I was not successful that time, but passed on the retake. My second child was born three years after the first, but I managed to complete my last exam in January 1995.
Benefits to Me Personally:
My local chapter welcomed new designees with open arms. In fact, I had attended several meetings as a CPCU student and been given a mentor by the chapter who kept track of my progress and checked in with me. Her husband was the reason I was able to pass the Accounting exam as he helped me with the concepts and equations. I had a network of friends and business partners before I even had my designation.
Value of CPCU to Employer
My involvement in the CPCU Society has included local chapter officer positions and project chair positions. I have also served at the national level on Society committees, task forces, and on the Board of Governors. These experiences have provided leadership development opportunities along with relationship building and project management development opportunities. I use these same skills on the job every day. My employer has benefited through my increased skills as well as my knowledge of the industry that extends beyond the borders of our company.
CPCU’s Value to Customers
Customers benefit when knowledgeable, professional, ethical people service their needs. Being a CPCU, I strive every day to live up to these standards. I feel customers truly benefit when a CPCU is helping meet their insurance and financial service needs.
